My Ride or Die Kitty

After having not written a blog post all last year, for whatever reasons that did not inspire me to write, I have decided that my theme to begin 2021 will be positive memories that happened to me during the chaotic pandemic year known as 2020.

Early February of last year, before all the joy of quarantine, I was walking home from the store with a good friend of mine. A woman she babysits for pulled up in her truck alongside us so that we were next to her passenger window. She was in the process of moving and asked my friend if she knew anyone that wanted a cat. As a reflex I piped up and asked if she had a picture of said kittty. She pulled up a pic on her phone and reached over to show it to me. It was love at first sight! I said that I needed to check with my family first and started to continue on, until I stopped and blurted out, “Can I meet her now?”

I went to the woman’s house to meet the kitty named Minnie and it really WAS love at first sight! I scooped her up into my arms and declared, “SOLD!” and brought Minnie home without consulting anyone else in my family. I just knew they would love her.

I was right, my family fell in love with Minnie too and she took to us right away like we were meant to be her family. We haven’t had a furry friend since having to say good-bye to our cat Smokey back in 2015 and we all have been missing having a pet. It was time to open our hearts and home again to a pet that needed us. Thankfully we have an awesome landlord so it was not a problem with him that I brought Minnie home.

I can’t explain it about cats, they choose me and Minnie was no exception. I am her main human that she follows around all day long. I now say to her as I do to Aurora, “Can’t I potty in peace?!” We all have our roles though. Little Hoooman’s job is to feed Minnie every morning and Minnie knows it, excitedly meowing to announce every morning that Little Hooman is awake. Big Hooman is a comfy lap to lay on when Minnie hangs out with us, but she doesn’t lay on Little Hooman or I. I almost wonder if she is afraid she is going to hurt us, or if we’re just not fluffy enough for her liking. At any rate, it is clear that Minnie loves all of us and does not just prefer one human like some cats do.

Minnie is a great mouser as we have found out, after being woke up on several occasions in the middle of the night with her chasing a mouse around our bed until the poor mouse meets his demise. She likes to eat the mice sometimes, but other times, she is just a little savage to her victims as seen below. (CAUTION: GRAPHIC PICTURE BELOW)

Minnie does not have a mean bone in her body (except if you’re a mouse) and I have never heard her hiss. She has growled like a dog though while looking out the window, which is kinda funny. She acts more like a dog than a cat sometimes. She waits for us on the stairs when we step out. She follows us around. She licks us as a dog would to give kisses, which I have never known a cat to do. Minnie is very vocal and talks to us, a LOT! I think she is one of the most vocal cats I have ever known. She hangs out in our school room with Little Hooman as she does her work. Aurora loves that she can have her kitty at school with her!

When it comes down to it, I think it is us that needed Minnie more than she needed us. She has been such a comfort and joy to us over this past whacky year. She is such great therapy and I am thankful that I took a chance to just scoop her up and bring her home. It’s not like I do that every day, thought if I had my chance and enough space, I probably would!

Do you have a furry friend (and I’m not talking about any hairy humans you may know LOL) Would you consider your furry friend a great companion, therapy and family member? I’d love to see some of your pet stories and pictures to brighten up my day!

  1. Minnie is adorable! You’re right–they do choose us. My middle cat, Piper, sat first on my front porch and then in the backyard, and meowed until I told my husband, ‘She’s coming inside.’ Best choice she ever made! She’s a rascal, but we love her!
